Details of the Course

Our BJJ Beginner course is 8 weeks long with 2 classes per week on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:15pm – 7:30pm (with access to all the other BJJ classes on our schedule too). Taught by our experienced team of coaches, each week builds on the last and gives you a crash course from the ground up to help kickstart your new hobby.

Each week focuses on a different topic, and we’ll be teaching each lesson with the complete novice in mind. On completion of the course, you’ll not only have a comprehensive overview of all the positions of grappling, but you’ll be confident enough to take part in controlled rolling (sparring) sessions, as well as step up to the intermediate classes. 

Along with the course, you’ll receive a BJJ Handbook and Journal, outlining all the basics, the do/don’ts and the lingo used in the Grappling world. By the end of this 8 week program, you’ll be immersed knee deep in one of the coolest martial arts ever to be created.

The course starts on Tuesday Oct 21st 2024 and classes are Tuesday and Thursday 6:15pm – 7:30pm for 8 consecutive weeks.

During that period, you will also be welcome to join the other foundation classes on our schedule which include:

Monday & Wednesday 6:15pm – 7:30pm

Tuesday & Friday 6:00am – 7:30am

Wednesday & Friday 9:30am – 10:45am

Saturday 9:30am – 11am.

You will also have full access to open mat and the gym facility at SBG Cork.

BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is a grappling sport derived from Judo and developed in Brazil by the Gracie Family. It’s a form of submission wrestling teaching you the skills and techniques you would need to subdue and control another person using bio-mechanics, pressure, position and leverage. Skills necessary to end confrontations such as joint locks, choke holds and strangles are a strong element of the art too.

While the extreme application of the art is violent by nature, its every day practice on the mat is very controlled and safe. It’s a phenomenal exercise regime which can develops your strength, flexibility and endurance.

The mental health benefits are also immense. As an Alive Martial Art, it challenges your concentration and focus, helps you to forget about your daily stress and anxiety and over time, it helps those who practice it to develop a very strong sense of self confidence. Becoming comfortable in uncomfortable situations is great for building resilience which can be applied to all aspects of your daily life.

Overall, BJJ is a lifestyle choice of healthy physical activity, a challenging environment for the body and mind and arguably the best self defence system there is.

If you can walk in the door here at SBG Cork, you’re fit enough to start. BJJ is one of the best ways to develop functional strength, increased range of motion and cardiovascular fitness all at the same time. Don’t think about where you’re starting about. Look forward to where you’re going to be!

As part of the course, you’ll receive a BJJ uniform (known as a Gi) and a belt. You’ll just need a tshirt underneath that and you’re good to go. It’s a good idea to have a gum shield. Nobody is going to be punching you in the face, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The 8 week course is €300. This includes the 2 beginner specific classes per week on Tuesday and Thursday, as well as access to all the other foundation BJJ classes we have on our schedule throughout the week. You also receive a BJJ uniform and belt, as well as a printed Handbook and Journal to guide and accompany you on your journey. As a member to SBG Cork, you will also have full access to the open mat facility and the gym area during any of our opening times.
